Former Iowa Girl Flyer Makes Dead Stick Landing -- August 11, 1930

(This is an article about my great aunt that my dad found while cleaning.  The newspaper article was from August, 1930)

Engine Died in License Test, but Harriet Sackett's Nerve Saved Her

Monday, August 11, 1930, Des Moines Tribune-Capital

The examination which was to give a former Des Moines girl, Harriet E. Sackett, her private pilots license at a Washington, D.C., airport late last week became a real test of her ability when the motor of her plane failed in the air.  Accounts of her successful landing were received by her father, F. A. Sackett, 1058 thirty-first street, Saturday in clippings from the Washington Star and the Washington News.

Miss Sackett was putting her plane through the necessary paces for the private's license, 3,000 feet above the capitol.  When her motor suddenly went dead, Miss Sackett succeeded in bringing her disabled ship to a safe landing with a "dead stick."

'Beautiful Exhibition.'

"It was one of the most beautiful exhibitions of feminine nerve and skill in flying I have ever seen," Alva Sole, president of the District of Columbia Air legion said.

A large crowd of aviators and friends had gathered to witness her examination.  She went through the requirements for her private pilot's license easily and was sailing along smoothly when suddenly her motor went dead half a mile up.

She sent the ship gently into a spiral and circled down over Washington airport.

"It was all I could do," she said.  "They taught me how to fly and I brought the ship in according to instructions.  That was all there was to it."

Flew After Eight Hours.

Miss Sackett was the first girl to be given a private pilot's license in the capital this year, and the first girl student of the District of Columbia Air legion to win her pilot's license.  She joined the legion last spring and made her first flight alone after eight hours and fifteen minutes of dual instruction.  She took her first parachute jump two weeks ago Sunday.

Miss Sackett left Des Moines in February, 1929, to fill an appointment in the department of secretary of state at Washington, D.C.  She is still employed in that department.  Before leaving for Washington, D. C., she had been secretary for J. J. Hughes, general agent of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company for five and a half years.

A twin sister, Mrs. Gerald J. Wadsworth, 3018 Woodland avenue, Des Moines, has never taken up flying.

Mom says:

My dad used to tell us that when the twin girls were born they did not expect them to live.  They put each one in a shoe box next to the fire (heating stove or whatever) and pulled them through.  My sister, Liz, lived with Harriet and her family one summer when she worked in D.C.

My vacation with Agony

A few weeks ago I spent the weekend with my brother Agony (aka Chris) at the cottage in Traverse City.  Uncle Agony played with the girls and Becky's kids for hours...We took the girls cherry picking, swimming, boating and to the beach.  Mostly, though, we just ate ice cream at Moomers, and played in the water at the cottage.  A perfect Michigan weekend (seeing as we get about 2 good weekends a year)

July 4th, Traverse City, Michigan

Took the girls up to our cottage in northern Michigan for the 4th of July.  Yes, I know, I am terribly late posting these photos.  You would have thought digital photos would be quicker to process, but it seems to take me much longer to get them downloaded from my camera and posted to the interweb.

For the last few years they've shot fireworks over Long Lake, so we can stand on the beach and watch them.  The girls didn't get as scared of the big fireworks as I thought they would.  It's great to be able to sit and watch the show, and then walk into right into the house!

The cherry festival was also the same weekend, so we took the girls cherry picking and to the carousel in downtown traverse city.  Libby named all the horses (Her's was named Cimeron -- the Indian horse), Jasmine's was probably named Shasta (the snow dog)

Jasmine Gotcha Day

July 18th, 2004.  The day they brought Jasmine to my hotel and left for good.  Some guy, her "grandma", and another little girl.  They spent maybe 10 minutes together, and then left.  The door shut, and Jasmine cried and screamed.  I expect I was the first man to ever pick her up.  She finally just collapsed and fell asleep, but woke up several times crying.  The next day we went to the China welfare agency (A communists style building, with leaky ceilings and creaky stairs).  I remember it being very hot.  She came in the yellow clothes, but I put the bib on her because she was drooling so much.  Jasmine would say "that must be a baby because she has no hair..."

Very first picture of Jasmine

"This is what she looked like.  13 hours to Toyko, 3 hours to Bejing, 4 hours to Xian, 1 hour drive through the country, and they handed me to her in the hotel lobby.  She was sick, tired, dirty and crabby.  I loved her on first sight"

Libby is 4 years old

Libby's 4th birthday party was the other day, not her actually birthday, but her party (she made that very clear that these were birthday party presents, and not birthday presents).  All the presents had horse's on them, from dresses, to animals, a music box, to the cake...

Dance Recital for 4 year old girls

Dance recital

Libby and Jasmine had there dance recital a few weekends ago.  Libby loves dance, Jasmine not so much.  Jasmine has decided she wants to do gymnastics next, and Libby is going to follow.  I keep trying to talk Libby into staying with dance another few years, but no such luck.  I'm sure she will keep dancing around the house though (complete with telling me "clap!" when she strikes a pose so that she can curtsey...)

School Concert 2008

Jasmine (age 4) and Libby (age 3) had their school concert a few weeks ago.  The theme was international, so the girls wore the dresses I bought them in Korea.  They had so much fun signing the songs -- Libby still calls every flag she sees a 'grand 'ole flag."  The first picture sums up the girls right now.  Jasmine is desperately trying to figure out what she is suppose to do next, and Libby doesn't care what she is suppose to do next.
